Following a successful retrospective exhibition in 2018, Tremenheere Gallery will again present an exhibition of paintings by Romi Behrens (1939 – 2019).
This new exhibition will coincide with the publication of the first substantial monograph on the artist; Romi Behrens: A Painting Life. The book will provide a selected but characteristically diverse range of visual and written material from the artist’s portfolio and archive, starting with Romi’s earliest paintings of her family, friends and the streets of Penzance and extending to religious themes done later in her life.
Romi Behrens lived in West Cornwall for nearly 60 years and begun painting when she moved to Cornwall in 1959. Inspired by her love of Matisse, Picasso and Van Gogh, she was largely self-taught and energetically painted the subjects around her every day. Her artistic career was as long as it was broad and spanned many genres, including still life, portraiture and landscapes. Romi’s talent was to instinctively capture the subject in a vibrant blaze of energy and colour. Her work has been exhibited from Cornwall to London, including the Royal Academy of Art and the Arnolfini in Bristol.
Tremenheere Gallery’s opening hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 4pm. Works from the exhibition will be available to view and purchase online once the exhibition opens. A Painting Life will run in the lower gallery, while at the same time the upper gallery will present Women Talking. On Thursday 12th September, 6 – 8pm, Tremenheere Gallery will host an exhibition opening event and book launch. Author Rachel Rose Smith will be present and available to personally sign books. No need to RSVP – all welcome.
Romi Behrens: A Painting Life will be published by Sansom & Company in September. You can pre-order a copy by emailing Rebecca Derry-Evans on [email protected].
